Ulysses’ Shelter is the second stage of a project co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union aimed at building a network of exchange literary residencies across Europe and designed primarily for young prose and/or poetry writers and literary translators. It is led by the Croatian publisher and literary agency Sandorf, which is joined by four partners: Literature Across Frontiers and Wales Literature Exchange in Wales, Krokodil in Belgrade, Serbia, Thraka in Larissa, Greece, and the Slovene Writers Association in Ljubjana, Slovenia. The project logo – a donkey carrying a book – refers to the preferred means of transport on the Croatian island of Mljet where the project started.
The literary residencies are located on Mljet (Croatia), in Ljubljana (Slovenia), in Larissa (Greece), in Belgrade (Serbia) and several locations in Wales. The programme will allow young authors and translators to work, perform and present themselves in two of these five different social and cultural contexts. The residencies will be accompanied by a supporting programme of activities and events aimed at specific local target groups. The theme of the first year of the Ulysses’ Shelter project, inspired by the setting up of the International Library of Poetry connected with the Mljet residency, is Library. The residents will be invited to reflect on the significance of the library as one of the most important symbols of peace and mutual human understanding by contributing a piece of writing or translation relating to the subject.

What is it about?
ULYSSES’ SHELTER: BUILDING WRITERS-IN-RESIDENCE NETWORK is the second stage of a project co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union. The network of literary residencies has now been extended to five European countries. The project and its residency network are designed primarily for young writers (prose and/or poetry) and literary translators.
The literary residency programme will take place on the island Mljet (Croatia), in Ljubljana (Slovenia), in Larissa (Greece), in Belgrade (Serbia) and several locations in Wales (UK). The residency programme focuses on transnational mobility and audience development, and will allow young authors and translators to work, perform and present themselves in two different social and cultural contexts. The residencies can bring new opportunities and possibilities to establish contact with other authors, translators, editors, publishers and/or representatives of various literary organisations from Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, UK, and Greece. The residencies will be accompanied by a rich supporting programme consisting of literature-related activities aimed at specific (local) target groups.
The thematic subject of the first year of the Ulysses' Shelter 2 project concerning all the residents chosen in this call is Library - both as a physical space and a virtual database of important and relevant data for any social, cultural or artistic context. Along with the development of the International Library of Poetry connected with the Mljet residence as a part of Ulysses' Shelter project, the residents will be invited to reflect on the importance of library as one of the most important symbols and monuments of peace and mutual human understanding by contributing a poem, an essay, a blog entry or a translation relating to the subject.

How long are the residencies?
Mljet (Croatia): 2 or 3 weeks

Who is eligible to apply?
- Applicants must be writers (prose and/or poetry) or literary translators
- Applicants must have at least two published literary works (one published book/e-book and one published literary work in an anthology/literary magazine/e-magazine) or two works of literary translation published
- Applicants must be no older than 40 (maximum age must be 40 years on deadline date)
- Applicants must be Croatian citizens
- Applicants must have advanced knowledge of English
- Applicants must be able to travel to two of the five participating countries, based on personal interest
- Applicants must be able to go to two residencies in one year
- Applicants must be open to collaborate and work with other artists and partners
- Applicants must write an entry for the ULYSSES’ SHELTER website Tovar.hr during their residency
- Applicants should be interested in fostering a relationship with the local audience
What is offered?
- Two residencies in two different countries during one year
- An introduction session, artist talk or other events/workshops
- Support for the resident
- Promoting residents on the ULYSSES’ SHELTER social media accounts, newsletter, and website Tovar.hr, as well as on all partners’ social media accounts, newsletters, and websites
- Networking possibilities and international visibility
- Covered accommodation and travel expenses (economy class)
- Fee (400 EUR gross including all taxes) and Subsistence (gross 300 EUR in Croatia, Greece, Serbia, Slovenia; 500 EUR in Wales)

NOTE: To be considered for the residency programme applicants must meet all eligibility criteria.
What are the submission requirements?
A single PDF which includes:
1. CV or Resume (no longer than one page)
2. Motivational letter that includes an explanation of why the applicant wants to visit specific residencies and a plan of what they want to work on while there, e.g. working on a new novel, short story or poetry collection, translation, etc. (no longer than one page)

When will the results be published?
The Selection Committee, consisting of three members who are experts in the field, will suggest three applicants from Croatia to participate in the residency programme during 2020.
The results will be announced on the project’s and partners’ websites and social media at the beginning of December 2019. The selected applicants will also receive a direct email.
