KROKODIL is an acronym in Serbian that stands for Literary Regional Gathering That Alleviates Boredom And Lethargy. Association KROKODIL is dedicated to production of literary, cultural and sociopolitical programs and projects with the aim of developing literary audiences and those that are interested in culture, promotion of the culture of dialogue, reconciliation and reconstruction of the broken links, particularly in the region of the Western Balkans, as well as deepening of the mutual understanding and the acceptance of differences in the European context and elsewhere.
The association was established in 2009, coinciding with the premiere of the literary festival KROKODIL in Belgrade. Ever since then, the festival is a regular, annual event that happens each June in the open-air arena in front of the Museum of Yugoslav History. Although originally a regional literary platform, the festival soon became more international and grew to become one of the most prominent, popular and recognised literary events not only in the region of the Western Balkans but also in Europe. In 2014 KROKODIL started a festival of literature and illustration for children called KROKODOKODIL, which helps raise a new literary audience by positioning literary production for children upfront, as well as the culture of reading with contemporary media.
